Exploring Chandrapur City

Chandrapur is also known as black gold city. As the area around the city is rich in coal seams. The city was founded by Gond king Ballal Shah in 13th century.  The city has its rich historical background. The fort around the city was built by the king to protect his empire from the enemy attack. The city is mostly known for coal production, Tadoba National Park, Mahakali Temple and Super Thermal power station.

It is well-known for housing the famous Hindu temples devoted to Godess Kali and Lord Mahadev. The actual meaning of Chandrapur is ‘ City of moon’. The city is rich in various minerals like black gold or also known as coal, limestone, etc. The city is simple and so are the people. The perfect combination of Maharashtrian royalty and simplicity.  

Popular food among Chandrapur

  • Vhangyacha Bharit – It’s a traditional dish of this region. Made with bringle, green chillies, onions, ginger. Which goes with bhakari or chapatti.
  • Khichdi– It’s a staple dish of this region. Made with rice, urad dal, onions, tomato. Remember to serve it hot with ghee or butter it will create magic. 
  • Chakli– It’s a delicious snack commonly prepared here. A crispy mouthwatering snack prepared with flour, cereals and spices. Served with different chutneys.
  • Makai Chiwda– A delicious snack prepared with maize, green chilli, coriander leaves. It’s a perfect evening snacks served with hot tea.

Places to visit in Chandrapur

  • Mahakali temple– The Temple is situated near Zarpat river. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali a form of Goddess Parvati. Mahakali Temple is an ancient holy place in Chandrapur. It’s a pride of Chandrapur. The devotees all around the country visit here in the month of April as the annual fair is held every year in this month.
Tadoba Andhari National Park Chandrapur
  • Tadoba Andhari National Park– Tadoba is the largest park in Maharashtra covering the range of 1,727sq.km. Major part of the forest lies in hilly areas, thus many hillocks and terrains provide shelter to the wild animals here. Tadoba is one of the 47 project tiger reserves existing in India. Jungle safaris are the main attraction here. Tadoba is the second tiger reserve of the state of Maharashtra.
Ancient caves Chandrapur
  • Ancient Caves–  Ancient caves is the set of 9 caves interconnected from each other. It’s a Bhuddhist caves constructed in 8th century. The cave was built to provide a place to the monks for meditation. The ancient location and its significance attract lots of tourists to visit here.
Anandvan Warora
  • Anandvan– Anandvan also known as ‘forest of joy’ is located in warora. Anandvan is the ashram and a community rehabilitation center founded by Baba Amte. Anandvan is a paradise for underprivileged as they are helped and made self-dependent by the volunteers of the ashram. It also promotes lots of activities like singing, painting, art and craft, dance, etc. The ashram has its beautiful garden in the campus area which is also the center of attraction for lots of tourist to visit this place.
